Co-written & directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) the film gets on with its main plot rather quickly and depicts the often frustrating but eventually rewarding process of legal justice with finesse. A few scenes do seem overplayed but majority stick the landing and silently let the emotions boil to the surface.
Uplifted by steady camerawork & sustained pace, the plot still ends up running a bit too long and is at its best only when it is entirely focused on the investigative side of preparing the defence. Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx & Brie Larson contribute with excellent inputs while Tim Blake Nelson is by all means a surprise standout.
Overall, Just Mercy expertly illustrates the arduous journey of Walter McMillian from sitting on death row to getting exonerated of all charges, all made possibly by Bryan Stevenson, a young attorney who actually cared. Highlighting the flaws in American judiciary system and still absent reforms in nearly all its hierarchies, this legal drama is worth a shot.
